Facebook is changing the way they rank comments

Facebook is changing the way they rank comments

From last month, Facebook has been touting some major overhauls for what is the largest social media platform on the internet right now, and it seems we are getting to see some of these changes already.

Comments on the social media network have always been ranked to an extent, but they are bringing in new measures to improve the kind of comments users see.

The first change will be directed at negative comments which will be taken off from showing. As to how they decide which comments are negative, that will be based on the interaction of others with such a comment.

Speaking of interaction, Facebook also plans to make sure only comments that get responses will be shown as prominent over the others. This will only be applicable to busy pages (such as pages belonging to brands, celebs, superstars, etc).

To put that in context, a comment on Lebron James’ page, for example, which gets no reply from the big man himself, will not be featured in the comments section over one that did get a reply.

For now, Facebook is not revealing how the algorithm will work or what else they have in plan for us. We believe that is to prevent people from gaming the system, but we are loving what they are doing anyways.

Google Takes Dark Mode to Assistant, Google Search and Discover

Dark mode is more than the new cool, and it has become the new way of life for Google apps like Search, Assistant and the discover mode all goes dark. These are 3 more apps that have taken the dark theme in addition to others like Google Calendar, Google Photos, YouTube, Google keep in anticipation for the Android Q release.

The Dark modes are going out in stages by a server-side update and requires the latest beta version of the Google App (v10.4.3), but having the last version might not necessarily guarantee the dark theme, so only whosoever be worthy may be granted the power of Google dark mode.

Similar to the other apps that have taken the black, it isn’t a true dark theme but closer to a dark grey color which gives benefit of saving the eyes from the blinding white while not using a strong dark contrast of 100% black.

When enabled, the entire Google app switches to dark grey, including all the searches, the bottom tab, the in-app Discover feed (which already supported dark mode in the launcher, when a user swipes right on the home screen, but wasn’t carried through into the Google app until now), collections, recent searches and all settings.

Everything relating to Assistant was also darkened, the Explore section for discovering new things you can try, to all the Pop-up, the dash board and all the Assistant settings.

When rolled out to an android device, it can be activated in Settings> General, where a Dark theme will be the penultimate item on the list.

Opera unveils new browser targeted at gamers

Opera has once again regained the spotlight as it unleashes the world’s first gaming browser, “Opera GX.” To the trained eye, it is basically a spiced-up version of the normal browser, but incorporates a whole lot of new features specifically for gamers.

An early access version of the new browser has been released with the company hinting its arrival in May with the 1.2 billion PC gamers in mind who apparently spend a lot of time in building their setups.

Opera GX contain tools that can limit the system resources used by the browser, so streaming can be seamless with the browser in the background. The RAM and CPU usage used by the browser can be controlled or limited.

Also, the browser has a built-in Twitch sidebar which enables the user to receive notifications and watch streams while browsing.

A lot of the features may be specific to gaming but some are for the suave, and the new sound effects are just that. The sound effects and musical logo are a result of the collaboration with the sound designer Ruben Rincon. The Sound effect can also be adjusted or turned off, as well as most of the browser features in the settings panel.

The browser comes with an orthodox dark red space theme, which can be changed to either of the 9 accent colors present.

Other features include the GX corner, which gives the latest gaming news and deals and the video Pop out function which allows you to stream and watch videos on other tabs opened in the browser is still retained.

iMovies Gets Green Screen Support Feature

iMovies, Apple’s video editing application, has not ceased to impress and improve since its debut in 2010, though a lot of major features have been intermittent only in recent years.

The latest version (2.2.7) of the advanced video editing app, able to edit 4k footage without stuttering (and it’s free), has added a feature “The green screen support” which is so mind blowing, it blows other orthodox mobile phone video editors out of the water.

The feature allows the user take footage recorded against a green screen (a blue screen too would do justice) and replace its background easily while keeping the subject. THE update gives the following features:

  • Transform your video with the new green screen effect that lets you remove the background on clips shot in front of a green or blue screen
  • Adjust the green screen effect with a 4-point mask and strength slider
  • Choose from 80 new soundtracks in genre including pop, chill, and sentimental that automatically adjust to match the length of your movie
  • Drop in still images with transparent backgrounds to use as logos or custom graphics on top of your video
  • Add photos as overlays to create picture-in-picture and split-screen effects
  • Choose to hide the border that surrounds picture-in-picture and split-screen effects
  • Instantly return to the edit screen of your project when switching back to iMovies from other applications
  • ClassKit support lets students deliver videos assignments to teachers using the schoolwork app
  • For users with videos in iMovies theater, the theater window is now available from  the ···  menu at the bottom of the projects screen
  • Sharing to iMovies theater is no longer supported; save your movies and trailers to iCloud Photos to watch them on other devices including Apple TV
  • Resolves an issue that could lead to a black viewer when previewing your video Fullscreen on an external display.

Apple introduces multi-cam feature in iOS 13.

Apple is introducing the multi-cam support which would allow apps to take photos, video, audio, metadata, and depth from multiple microphones and Cameras on a single iPhone or iPad. This is part of the feature set that we are expecting with the iOS 13, and we are excited to have it.

Multi-cam support has already been made available to a number of Android devices in some variant or form over the years. Macs have also supported this feature for a while.

This feature will allow developers create apps that stream videos or take pictures or audio using both the front camera and the rear camera at the same time. The Multi-Cam support is only going to be made available to latest devices from Apple like the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and the latest iPad Pro (which will be through iPadOS).

There are certain combinations that can be performed on these devices. The regular and telephoto camera on the rear of the iPhone, or the selfie camera and the regular rear camera, and there are combinations that would allow the use of the TrueDepth selfie camera

The new feature was presented during WWDC, with a demo picture-in-picture video recording app that was recording the user from the front-facing camera while recording from the main camera simultaneously. The app enabled the ability to swap between the two cameras during playback in the photos app, a feature which would give developers control over the TrueDepth cameras.

Mobile devices will be limited to a single session of multi-cam unlike the mac, iPhones and iPad due to power constraints.

Upcoming OnePlus 7 Pro update addresses remaining camera issues address other issues

Since the recent release of the OnePlus 7 Pro, there have been complaints by users about the camera and the touch sensitivity. Fortunately, users can rest easy now as things are about to get much better with the new update that has hit the unit.

The OnePlus 7 Pro camera left a lot of room for improvement and the Asian OEM is not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring the camera gets to maximum capacity.  This update will have tremendous improvements on the camera as OnePlus released samples comparing the performance of the camera before and after the update and the results were satisfactory.

The changelog for the camera in OxygenOS 9.7.5 update includes:

  • Improved overall contrast and color performance
  • Improved white balance consistency of triple camera
  • Improved accuracy and stability of autofocusing
  • Fixed issue of greenish tone in some low light scenes
  • Fixed issue of contrast and color saturation of ultra-wide
  • Improved clarity and noise reduction in low light scene of ultra-wide
  • Improved clarity and noise reduction of telephoto
  • Improved clarity and color of Nightscape
  • Improved brightness and clarity in extreme low light scene of Nightscape

The update also improves the touch sensitivity on the OnePlus 7 pro which will probably address the ‘phantom tap’ issues which some users have complained about. Beyond that, the update makes improvements in the ambient display and tap-to-wake feature while also beefing up the audio quality of voice calls made through third-party applications.

The update became available on June 6, and you should already have a notification to get yours.

Facebook has now banned Huawei from preinstalling its apps

Tech giant, Huawei, has been making headlines recently after they became a pawn in the China-US trade war. Today, they have been dealt another blow in the shape of Facebook now preventing them from preinstalling apps from the company onto their phones.

According to Reuters, Huawei is no longer able to pre-install Facebook apps on their latest devices and other related brands. This also includes WhatsApp and Instagram, which are both owned by Facebook. The ban specifically applies to models that yet to be shipped.

On the bright side, existing Huawei phone users will still be able to use and receive updates on these apps. Users can manually install these apps if they do not have them pre-installed. The apps can also be installed from the App store.

Huawei is expected to announce their very own OS in August, and no one is entirely sure, but bets are on the name being ArkOS. Hopefully, that should remedy some of the current problems on ground.

Google Photos goes Dark

Google Photos goes Dark

Going dark might be the new vogue as it is one of the most requested features in any app landscape.

Most apps have already started incorporating a dark interface subject to their users’ discretion which would help save battery life on smartphones with OLED displays. A lot of first-party apps have gotten dark modes over the past several weeks, including apps like Google calendar, Keep, YouTube, Google Maps, Chrome, Drive and now, Google photos has joined the fray.

Google photos version 4.17.0.249919200 will showcase the new dark interface which would be applicable by a server-side switch and users on non- Android Q devices will be first to experience Google photos Dark mode. This look adopts a dark gray background in place of a full black color.

The search field and bottom navigation are slightly lighter than the main gallery’s dark grey background. The status bar (merged with the Search field) adopted a lighter grey color.

Photos are shown to stand out more and pop while scrolling, with the contrast. The feature is applied throughout the app, including settings, share sheet and the navigation drawer. The only major exception appears to be Google Lens.

There seems to be an expansion of the dark mode beyond all Android Q devices to all users. Many Android Pie users are reporting that it respects the developer option in settings and it has no toggle in Photos to manually disable or enable. It might be karma as only Android Q users are still only ones that can access the dark theme for Google Drive.

Spotify to introduce new ‘Social Listening’ feature that allows you to enjoy songs with your friends

Social media is growing in leaps and bound, and we are seeing this concept in more and more ways by the day. Today, social media might be finding a way into our music and how we enjoy it.

According to a developer who likes to look through codes for hidden updates, Spotify is working on a new feature which should be called ‘Social Listening.’ Like the name implies, this is the feature that will allow you and your friends listen to the same songs via the streaming service at the same time.

It would work like a shared folder in Google Drive where you can create a playlist of choice from where you and your friends can either add songs or just listen to the already added ones.

We don’t know when this feature is coming out for sure, but we do know that it is something we are very much interested in trying out.

WhatsApp to get new feature allowing you to play VNs automatically

WhatsApp to get new feature allowing you to play VNs automatically

WhatsApp has a lot of new features in store for us, and they have started showing some of them one after the other. For those who happen to be on the beta version of the app, the good news is that you should already have access to one of these future updates to the general app – simultaneous voice messages.

As the name implies, the aim of this update is to ensure better access to voice messages when a contact sends more than one to you in quick succession. What the update does is play the first VN, give you a beep to let you know when that one is done and then plays the next one till it gets to the end of the pile. All of these will happen without your having to touch the phone at all.

This might be a small thing in the end, but it is one of those small things that make up the bigger picture. All that, and we know there is still a lot more on in store from the Facebook-owned IM service.
