Last year, Apple took the covers of the AirPods Pro true wireless earphones. The highlight of the accessory is the active noise cancellation functionality it features.

The noise cancellation feature gave the AirPods Pro an edge over other wireless earbuds. And it saw that Apple sold millions of units.

Now, reports have it that the tech giant is working on the successor model of the AirPods Pro. However, with a new design.

Claims mention that the second-generation AirPods Pro would have a much round-shaped earphone design. It will also feature the iconic in-ear design and active noise cancellation.

Regarding the charging case, it pretty much has the same as the first-generation model.

However, reports say that the new case would be much compact and lighter than the current model.

Inside, the second-generation Airpods Pro would feature the Apple H1 chipset – the same chip that drives most of the AirPods series, including the current AirPods Pro.

The audio experience on the upcoming AirPods Pro would likely improve. And it will also come with additional features like resistance against sweat, water, among others.

A few other reports have mentioned that the upcoming AirPods Pro may come in two distinct sizes – a regular one and a bigger one.

It is advisable to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Finally, MTN has debuted its Supersonic AirFibre service in South Africa. The offering aims to put an end to the problem of distance and lack of infrastructure in urban, township, and rural areas. 

The latest innovation provides fibre-quality connectivity to more households and communities across the nation. 

”We are breaking down the traditional barriers that have denied many people the access to a modern and connected life,” said Calvin Collett, Managing Director of MTN SA’s ISP.

”From Soweto to Swellendam, we believe that every household deserves the speed and benefits of fibre-like connectivity. Hence, the launch of the Supersonic AirFibre service.”

The Supersonic AirFibre connectivity aims to deliver swift, inexpensive, and uncapped connectivity solutions to areas where traditional fibre installations are absent. 

The connectivity solution was built on unlicensed spectrum. And it’s being maintained by MTN’s technology team.

The telecommunication firm designed the service to deliver quality network – one that align with MTN’s standards – at affordable rates.

”Our Supersonic AirFibre offering is in line with our track record of optimizing frequency bands. In the past, we have undertaken this approach through the allocation of repurposed bands for 2G mobile services as well as new generation of mobile technology – including third and fourth generation technologies,” Collett added.

Speedy installation is one of the advantages of the AirFibre offering. It requires no trenching and subscribers of this service will enjoy access to new technology that matches a full-fibre installation.

The following are the launch costs of the Supersonic AirFibre service:

  • R399 for 5Mbps uncapped 
  • R499 for 10Mbps uncapped 
  • R599 for 20Mbps uncapped 
  • R799 for 50Mbps uncapped 
  • R999 for 100Mbps uncapped

The swift connectivity service will be available in areas where customers register their demand for the offering.

The services Pula render helps smallholder farmers to endure climate risks, improve their farming practices, and ultimately increase their profit over time.

Pula leverages machine learning, crop cut experiments, and data points relating to weather to deliver products that cater to varieties of farming risks.

Notable clients of the startup include the Central Bank of Nigeria, Zambian Government, World Food Programme, Kenyan Government, and many more.

‘’When Thomas and I launched Pula in 2015, we had one goal – to build and provide scalable insurance solution for smallholder farmers in Africa,’’ Rose said.

‘’With our latest funding, the time is right to break into new grounds. In our five years of operation, we’ve built strong traction for our products and services. And we look to penetrate other markets as there are millions of smallholder farmers out there with risks to their livelihoods.’’ Rose concluded.

In this present age, the cost of getting legal aid is on the high side. That is why many don’t have the urge to fight for that which is right legally.

Legal fees have crippled many individuals and companies financially, and many don’t have enough money to get legal assistance.

In a bid to eradicate this problem, two attorneys have partnered to launch Legal Lens.

The South African startup aims to protect individuals, companies, and state entities from inflated legal charges.

The firm, which came to be in November 2020, was founded by Yusha Davidson and Catherine-Jane Paulse.

Legal Lens boasts of its ability to reduce legal fees by up to 60%, or an average of 10%. The startup allows their clients to send in invoices and any correspondence related to arrangement on legal charges.

The firm digitally reviews submitted invoices to identify areas of potential savings using experienced attorneys, machine learning, and optical character recognition. It then engages the client’s lawyer regarding the charges.

Legal Lens handles all engagements professionally to avoid soiling the relationship between the clients and their respective lawyers.

Following the revision of the invoices, the startup obtains a new invoice reflecting the reduced fee to be paid from the legal firm.

Meanwhile, the startup charges its clients 17.5% of the amount saved. In a case where there is no reduction in the fees, Legal Lens does not charge.

”The recent discussion paper by the South African Law Reform Commission regarding its investigation into legal fees confirms that improper and unethical billing is a reality in the county,” Paulse stated.

The pair realized that it was difficult to review legal invoices, as clients fear tampering the close relationship they have with their lawyers.

Besides, they may not have the necessary knowledge required to dispute legal invoices.

”It’s time-consuming. So, we developed a tech-based solution to review legal invoices and reduce legal charges,” Davidson said.

Now, a Nigerian-based tech firm has invented a comfortable and profitable way of recycling waste materials. Scrappays has combined technology, recycling, and finance together.

The Scrappay platform enables households and business to sell off recyclable waste at befitting prices.

The Started was established by Boluwatife Arewa, Olumide Ogunleye, and Tope Sulaimon in 2019.

The firm came to limelight following its participation in the Founder’s Institute accelerator programme.

Scrappay leverages USSD, mobile app, web app, and Internet of Things technology to facilitate the decentralized collection of recyclable waste.

Waste producers – individuals or corporate bodies – can optimize their recyclable waste disposal process by having local collectors remove such waste. The process saves time, helps them earn extra cash, and provides an income source for the collectors.

‘’With over 85% of recyclable materials produced not recovered, speculation has it that waste generation volume would quadruple over the next three decades,’’ Sulaimon said.

‘’The collection deficit is increasing astronomically and in turn increasing the market size. In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria has the fastest growing waste production rate.’’

‘’The market focuses on producer compensation alone, and it has not been self-propagating across income classes.’’

Scrappay aims to correct the system that favours the producers alone. The startup allows users to decide when they wish to dispose of recyclable waste in exchange for cash.

The initiative also allows people to earn a living by hosting a collection point or becoming an independent collector of recyclable waste.

‘’The entire Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are target markets for us. And we look forward to expand into those regions soon,’’ Sulaimon concluded.

The platform allows unbanked merchants to make payments, pay bills, and sell electronic services such as airtime.

CreditGo came to life in January 2020. However, the startup didn’t go public until June 2020. The payment interface aims to allow merchants conquer the challenges of PoS machine acquisition cost.

CreditGo offers its customers swift and secure electronic services through a free mobile application.

The CreditGo payment app allows merchants to earn commissions on airtime sales, and it also facilitates customer’s bill payments.

According to the firm, merchants will be able to buy products from wholesalers using their CreditGo wallet in the coming weeks.

‘’We took a huge advantage of the market segment that is left behind from the banking system and financial institutions,’’ said Omar El Welely, CEO of CreditGo.

‘’The unbanked sector in Egypt and the informal economy makes 45% of Egypt’s economy. We are talking about an annual market of US$73 billion.’’

‘’We are in talks with VCs and angel investors from within and outside Egypt. We have plans to expand to similar African markets in the future,’’ Omar concluded.

Recently, Nile unveiled a tech-enabled online platform that facilitates the wholesale trade of fresh farm produce. The innovation aims to provide a seamless connection between farmers and direct buyers.

The startup is a Business-to-Business firm that aggregates supply across the SADC region. It provides buyers with high-quality fresh farm produce at competitive rates.

‘’Our platform makes it easy to trade farm produce. Wholesale buyers can now view the availability and live prices of preferred produce from multiple farmers across different regions. A buyer can make an instant order by selecting specific ripeness, grade, size, and packaging,’’ said Louis de Kock, co-founder of Nile.

The founding team of the startup started deploying the concept behind the online marketplace last February. However, the platform didn’t launch until last November when it went public.

The startup aims to take advantage of the rate at which people desire quality and fresh farm produce in South Africa to generate some revenue.

‘’Nile has developed a digital ecosystem that solves issues inherent to food trading – including quality verification, price discovery, payments, and logistics,’’ Kock concluded.

OnePlus has officially joined the league of smartphone manufactures that produce smart wearables.

Today, the Chinese giant finally unveiled the first OnePlus-branded wearable device – OnePlus Band.

The all-new fitness tracker features a decent display, a lasting battery, and many health and fitness tracking features.

The OnePlus Band has a full-colour 1.1-inch AMOLED panel. The touchscreen display offers the user a resolution of 126 x 294 pixels.

The smart band allows the user to customize its appearance by choosing from the various UI wallpapers pre-installed on the device.

The OnePlus Band houses a 100mAh battery that promises a 14 – day battery life. Users can charge the band via a USB-A charging dongle that comes in the retail box.

The device arrives with support for 5ATM and IP68 dust and water resistance and replaceable straps.

The smart band connects with Android smartphones operating on Android 6 or higher.

Regarding connectivity, the device comes with the Bluetooth 5.0 LE. The user can explore the health features via the OnePlus Health app by connecting the band to their smartphone.

It supports other health features like heart rate sensor, gyroscope, sleep monitor, 3-axis accelerometer, and a SpO2 tracker.

Talking fitness, the OnePlus Band tracks indoor and outdoor activities like running, cycling, walking, badminton, swimming, yoga, elliptical training, cricket, and yoga.

The new OnePlus Band has arrived in India to rival the likes of Xiaomi Mi Band 5. The smart band retails for Rs 2,499 (~$34) in India.

The company is offering interested customers dual-coloured tangerine grey and navy bands for Rs 399 (~$5.4).

Sales of the OnePlus Band kicks off on January 12 via Amazon India, Flipkart, and OnePlus India’s online store.

Talking features, the all-new TWS earphones from Apple features a silicone ear tip which sits over the ear canal. The silicone ear tips are vital for the Active Noise Cancellation feature that the earphones offer.

The in-built software supports dual-microphone setup, which continuously adapts to remove background sound and offer top-notch sound experience.

It also comes with adaptive equalizer that automatically regulate audio frequencies based on the shape of the user’s ear canal.

Karisimbi Technology is a Rwanda-based e-health startup that is working round the clock to reduce – and possibly eliminate – paperwork in Rwandan Hospitals.

In that vein, the health-focused startup has started offering hospitals digital patient files that ease service delivery.

So far, the innovation by Karisimbi has been to treat over 30,000 patients in various hospitals across Rwanda.

The startup began operations in 2016. It was founded by Angelo Igitego after accompanying a relative to a local hospital in Kigali.

‘’Wait times were very long and difficult. As a systems thinker, I saw there was an opportunity to automate repetitive tasks like patient file creation, file retrieval, and billing,’’ said Angelo.

Angelo did come up with a solution and named it IvuliroTech. It is a software that helps hospitals go paperless, and it provides them with detailed electronic medical records for every patient.

‘’Paper files are expensive to print, store, and manage. Besides, they cause a delay in service delivery. Imagine having to look for a single file among thousands of files when the life of the patient is on the line.’’

Karisimbi’s primary aim is to solve the problem of delayed service delivery by eliminating the cause of the delay. Since the firm launched its MVP in September 2019, over a dozen hospital have adopted the digital recording system.

‘’Ninety percent of them are paying clients. We are in the process of working with the umbrella organization of private medical facilities. The collaboration will boost our market share handsomely in the next two years,’’ Angelo concluded.
