As Vuma begins the expansion of its initiative to provide schools with free internet, the company has successfully launched the Free Fibre to Schools programme in Limpopo, South Africa.

Before now, primary and secondary schools situated along Polokwane have been provided with a free 1Gbps fibre line. Polokwane is home to one of Vuma’s fibre deployment infrastructure; thus, making it easy to supply schools in the area with fast fibre internet.

Already, Adsum Academy alongside Laerskool Pietersburg – Oos are beneficiaries of this initiative. Both institutions received fibre installations, and connections with Capricom and the initiative promises to connect more schools shortly.

Recently, Vuma welcomed the fibre-to-home service in Polokwane, and this led to the launch of the free fibre internet in Limpopo. Currently, Vuma’s fibre connections are active in areas like Bendor, Flaura park, Welgelegen, Annadale, Fauna Park, and Sterpark.

The CEO of Vuma, Dietlof Mare says, ‘’Fast fibre internet is the solution to reliable and efficient e-learning experience. Although the fibre internet initiative is still in the early stages of adoption in the country. South Africa is privileged for the steps taken to make fibre technology a reality over the last decade,’’

In partnership with internet service providers in its network, Vuma started the Fibre to Schools programme with Parkhurst Primary School, Hoerskool Linden, and Greenside High back in 2016. Since then, over 380 schools across Johannesburg, Durban, Ekurhuleni, and Cape Town have been connected to the service.

For schools to benefit from this initiative, the school must be registered with either the Independent Examinations Board or the Department of Basic Education.

With a rapid and reliable fibre connectivity, schools are given the opportunity to equip learning environments with smart devices and platforms that ensure learners have access to relevant e-learning opportunities without interruption.

Since the global outbreak of the novel Coronavirus, there has been a significant increase in the number of cybercrimes recorded worldwide. Most cybercriminals are targeting not only individuals but corporate businesses as well. The discovery has made the need for business owners to protect their businesses the first thing on their priority list.

Recently, the local attack of a healthcare organization was reported in the South African news. The news indicates that South African businesses, organizations, and start-ups are also potential targets of cyberattacks.

According to reports, South Africa has recorded a 33% increase in the volume of internet-related crimes since March 2020.

In a bid to provide businesses and organizations with protection, Vodacom – One of the leading telecoms company in the country has announced its partnership with Cloudflare. Together, the two companies aim at providing businesses of all sizes with more secure, protected, and reliable website services.

Lately, cybersecurity has become a major concern for all business and organizations.

According to the 2020 reports on Global Risks by the World Economic Forum, cyberattacks are ranked the second risk of great concern for businesses globally.

A widespread type of cyberattack faced by many websites lately is termed Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. This type of attacks targets websites with the sole aim of bombarding them with more traffic than the server can handle. This, in turn, makes the site useless, dent the company’s reputation, and of course, lead to loss of revenue.

MAX, a bike hailing service mentions how it’s keeping the business afloat despite the Lagos Okada ban.

Metro African Express (MAX) started operations as a logistics firm before it expanded into bike hailing services in 2017. Being the first company in the country to come up with bike hailing service business, MAX has come a very long way since it started. With the company’s mobile app, users can easily request pick-up riders to commute within Lagos and also make deliveries promptly.

MAX experienced notable growth between 2017 and 2020 as a mobility service in five major states in Nigeria. However, following the restrictions placed on the operations of passenger motorcycles in Lagos State in February, the company’s growth was threatened as it had to stop operation in its largest market at the time.

Despite the challenges faced by the company, it states that it is still experiencing growth.

The CEO and Co-Founder of MAX, Adetayo Bamiduro said, ‘’Talking about our firm from the perspective of what we do in Lagos is different from talking about our firm as a whole because we operate in five cities.’’

MAX was initially founded to solve the problem of Logistics in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos. Though the city has a well-developed economy, the transport system and road networks are still lagging. Having a population of over 20 million and bad road networks, residents of the city face constant traffic daily.

Considering the transport conditions and the fact that at the time, logistic companies mainly made use of buses and vans for delivery services, MAX saw an opportunity to provide low-cost delivery services at a much faster rate with the use of motorbikes.

In 2016, MAX started exploring the idea of bike-hailing services in Nigeria. The startup was inspired by Grab in East Asia and the mobility innovation in Indonesia.

The company expanded into bike hailing services in 2017 starting with a fleet of 22 motorcycles.

For MAX, logistics was always part of its many businesses. After the withdrawal of operations in Lagos, Bamiduro stated that the company allocated a significant chunk of its bike fleet to its logistics arm.

Since February, the firm claims that its logistics business has grown over 100%. MAX mentioned that it is experiencing consistent growth outside Lagos, especially in Ibadan and Kano.

MAX is operating bike and tricycle hailing services in Kano and also recording steady growth in the city of Ibadan over the last six months.

‘’We have been experiencing exciting growth in Akure, Ibadan, and Kano and looking to launch a new type of service in Ekiti. We are on track to achieve a 10x growth before the year runs out,’’ Bamiduro concluded.

Mipango Fintech launches personal finance app.

Mipango Fintech just launched a new app that will provide Tanzanians with free personal financial management.

The app is a personal finance mobile application that allows users to monitor and manage their income, expenses, financial targets, help and offerings, and savings. It makes use of Artificial Intelligence to guide users to better financial management towards attaining financial freedom.

The Mipango app operates in Swahili and aims at supporting Tanzanians in managing their expenses and also provides them with the opportunity to set up budgets, analyze their costs, and track their financial life.

In a statement, co-founder of Mipango Fintech, Lilian Makoi said, financial literacy is a crucial gap in the growth of this market. A more significant percentage of Tanzanian adults do not keep track of their expenses and have no financial goals. This leads the majority to abject poverty as they engage in lousy debt practices.

The company aims to change the way the citizens of Tanzania relate to money by launching this application. Apart from the tracking of the user’s income and expenses, the app will also help users manage loans and provide them with access to relevant investment opportunities.

‘’The company expects to have more than 1 million downloads within the first twelve months of launch,’’ Lilian added.

‘’This launch has three features. Create your financial profile, set up your monthly budget, and record your daily to monthly expenses. With swift access to your financial data, you should be in more control of your finances than before,’’ says Chris Rabi, Mipango Fintech co-founder.
