In late February, we reported that MTN discontinued its Unlimited Data Plans as part of its upward price review. Our latest check shows that two unlimited data plans have been restored. The Silver and Ruby Unlimited Data Plans have been restored to their original price and FUP, making them some of the best-value MTN data plans right now for your MTN 4G and 5G MiFi and Routers.
In the past couple of weeks since the initial upward price review, MTN has been updating the prices and data allowance of various data plans probably in response to consumer behavior.
Most of the best-value MTN Data plans were retired while others saw price increases or data allowance cuts which resulted in the most cost-effective data plan from MTN going from a rate of 10 kobo per MB to 17 kobo per Megabyte.
However, in the last couple of days, MTN has quietly restored a few of the most cost-effective bundles like the Silver and Ruby unlimited plans. Also restored was the 1.5TB Yearly Broadband plan which costs ₦150,000.
MTN also quietly introduced a super-cost-effective 200GB monthly broadband plan for ₦25,000.
With the latest price updates, the most cost-effective MTN Data plan has been restored to 10 kobo/MB, though overall most data plans are less cost-effective compared to earlier in the year before the 50% price hike.
The MTN Silver Unlimited Data Plan was ₦18,000 and has a 150GB fair usage policy (FUP) and a 5GB daily limit once you exceed FUP until you complete the validity period of 30 days. The plan saw a slight price adjustment to ₦20,000, an 11% increase.
The MTN Ruby Unlimited Data Plan was retained ‘as is’. It still has a 300GB FUP and a 5GB daily limit once you exceed FUP until you complete the validity period of 30 days. The price is still ₦30,000.
We have always recommended the MTN Unlimited Data Plans as the best data plans for your MTN 5G Router and your 4G MiFi and Routers. The return of these unlimited data plans and the return and launch of the broadband plans will give more value to customers accessing the internet with MTN broadband devices like routers and MiFi.
In fact, if you want to get the best value for money on data, you need to buy an MTN broadband device. This is because most cost-effective MTN data plans can only be accessed from a broadband device like the 5G router or MiFi.
For example, if your budget is ₦20,000, and you want to subscribe to a data plan on your Android phone or iPhone, the best you can do is the 75GB monthly data plan. However, with your router or MiFi, you can subscribe to the 150GB unlimited data plan. That is at least 100% more data at the same price. This is if we ignore the 5GB daily limit that you get when you have used up your FUP for the month.
To subscribe to a 150GB monthly data plan on your phone, you will need ₦35,000. That is a whole ₦15,000 more.
So, if you want to get the best value for money on your data subscription, get an MTN 5G Router, an MTN 4G Router, or an MTN MiFi.
With the restoration of the Silver and Ruby unlimited data plans as well as the return of the 1.5TB Yearly Broadband Plan and the introduction of the 200GB monthly broadband plan, we have now reviewed our recommendations for best MTN data plans.
