The long-awaited Mate 20 series flagship smartphones from Chinese OEM Huawei have officially been announced with mouth-watering features at an event held in London yesterday (October 16).
The flagship duo, Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro both come as successors to last year’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the bigger device of the duo and it comes with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio curved 6.39-inch OLED display with 2K+ (3,120 x 1440 pixels) resolution. Within the Mate 20 Pro’s display is the in-display fingerprint sensor which unlocks the device 30% faster than other phones with such technology.
It also comes with a notch that looks like that of the iPhone X at the top of the display. Embedded in the notch are the 24MP selfie camera, flood illuminator, dot projector, IR camera, and ambient light sensor.
The Mate 20 Pro sports a total of three cameras on the rear and dual-tone dual LED flash. The cameras were manufactured by Huawei in conjunction with Leica and are configured as follows: 40MP wide-angle primary lens with f/1.8 aperture, 20MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.2 aperture.
The Mate 20 Pro comes with a 4,200mAh battery and supports Huawei’s SuperCharge technology and reverse wireless charging.
The Huawei Mate 20 on the other hand has a bigger 6.53-inch IPS LCD display but with FHD+ 2240 x 1080 pixels resolution and a waterdrop style of notch. Unlike the Mate 20 Pro, it doesn’t support 3D face unlock as it lacks the necessary sensors that makes it compatible with the technology.
The front-facing camera is also the same (24MP) as the Mate 20 Pro. It also comes with triple camera sensors on the rear which are configured as follows: a primary f/1.8 12MP wide-angle lens, 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture.
A watered down 4,000mAh battery powers the Huawei Mate 20.
On the inside, both the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are powered by Huawei’s latest HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset with 8 cores and a max clock speed of 2.6GHz and will run the Android 9 Pie operating system.
The Mate 20 is available in 4GB and 6GB RAM options with 128GB built-in memory while the Mate 20 Pro has 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Both devices supports micro SD card storage expansion using the second SIM slot.
The Huawei Mate 20 starts at €800 for the 4GB model while the 6GB RAM model will sell for €850. The Mate 20 Pro with 6GB/128GB storage configuration costs €1,050. Huawei also announced a Porsche Design of the Mate 20 Pro in two variants:
Huawei Mate 20 Porsche Design (8GB/256GB) — €1,695
Huawei Mate 20 Porsche Design (8GB/512GB) — €2,095
