The Minister for Communication and Digital Economy has authorized a new protocol following the recent directive for all Nigerians to link their National Identity Numbers (NIN) to their SIM card.
Dr Isa Pantami recently approved the development and release of an upgraded National Identity Number slip and a mobile app.
The Minister iterated that the step is part of the government’s policy to ease the NIN acquisition process and linkage to SIM card.
The development allows institutional bodies like the National Identity Management Commission and Nigerian Communications Commission to have correct data of subscribers of any telecom network.
Further, the Minister ordered the cancellation of the fees charged by mobile network operators for NIN verification.
‘’These efforts aim to support the policy to link subscribers’ NIN to their SIM. The Federal government of Nigeria approved the directive on February 4, 2020,’’ said Dr Isa.
Dr Isa added that the new web service application called NIMC Mobile App, and the newly improved NIN slip are now available for public use.
The app is a secure gateway for Nigerians and legal residents to get, verify, and authenticate their respective identities easily. The app also enables the user to link their NIN to their phone number(s).
‘’The development of the app and other tools to support the National Identity Number process tallies with the National Digital Economy Policy for a Digital Nigeria.’’
Meanwhile, the Minister has instructed the NIMC to provide swift responses to enquiries. And also share comprehensive multimedia guides to allow users easily install the NIN app and obtain their improved NIN slips.
