Django Girls has announced that it is coming to Lagos Nigeria to teach programming to young women and girls for free.
Django Girls is a non-profit organization that empowers women through free computer programming workshops. The upcoming workshop, tagged Django Girls Lagos, is part of a bigger initiative of the organization.
Django Girls said it will host a free one-day workshop for 30 women in Lagos. The workshop, aimed at total beginners, will teach the women how to build websites from the scratch.
At the workshop, attendees will create their first website, and will be mentored by programmers who will help them get into web development. A light breakfast and a healthy lunch will also be provided.
To be a part of the workshop, participants only need a good knowledge of the English language, a laptop, and a smile. They don’t need to break the bank, the organizers said.
“We believe that the IT industry will greatly benefit from bringing more women into technology. We want to give you an opportunity to learn how to program and become one of us – Women Developers,” the organizers stated in a blogpost.
Interested participants are encouraged to apply as quickly as possible as there are limited spaces. It’s also worthy to note that application ends on January 24, 2016 and participants will be notified of the status of their applications on January 30 or sooner.
The main workshop will take place on the February 20. A pre-installation party is also scheduled for February 19 at 4:00 pm in Lagos. Participants at the pre-installation party will get all the required software ready for the workshop and also meet with their coach and group members.
The event, organized by Aisha Bello with support from The Nigerian Python Community, is sponsored by GitHub, Django, Python Software Foundation, Co-Creation Hub Nigeria, and Godwin Effiong, a Senior IT leader with over 20 years experience.
